Tianjin Juilliard School (TJS) is a center for performance, practice, research, and interactive exhibitions with shared spaces designed to welcome the public into the creative process and performance of music. TJS is the first performing arts institution in China to confer a U.S.-accredited Master of Music (MM) degree.

The new school also includes a Saturday college preparatory program for students ages 8 to 18; continuing education programs for professional and adult learners; public education programs for music students of all ages; and public performances. The 32,500-square-foot (350,000-square-foot) building, located in the financial district of Eugiapu, was designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, the same firm that was responsible for the 2009 expansion of New York’s iconic Juilliard House.

The building consists of four faceted pavilions that house a 690-seat concert hall, a 299-seat concert hall, a 225-seat black box theater, and administrative, faculty and rehearsal programs. Five glass bridges encompass an expansive public space that extends the surrounding park into the building, inviting students, visitors and concert-goers to socialize, relax and experience the practice and informal performances of students. The glass bridges contain classrooms, teaching studios and practice rooms, encouraging visual and auditory access to the study of music, inviting exchanges between students, faculty and visitors.

The school uses advanced telecommunication and videoconferencing technology to ensure a high degree of communication and cooperation between students and faculty at Tianjin Julliard School and The Juilliard School in New York. For example, the Juilliard Imagination space is a digitally-connected exhibition space capable of hosting live concerts between both Juilliard facilities.

Qingpu Pinghe School occupies an entire city block of 50,000 square meters and resembles a small village with over 2,000 students between the ages of three and fifteen instead of residents.

In China, the concept of “mega-structures” is common, when one building tries to contain the maximum number of different functional spaces. But in this project, the architects of Open did the opposite and built a separate structure for each structure.

The complex includes a kindergarten, primary and secondary schools, arts center and library-theater in the form of a whale which we have already written about in detail. In addition, there is a building with a gym and swimming pool, as well as student dormitories.

This design concept is inspired by the African proverb “It takes a village to raise a child”. The architects tried to create an environment where there are many options for interaction and play, which they believe affects the child’s development and contributes to a richer and more diverse learning experience.

The kindergarten is in a self-contained building, and the schools are housed in facilities scattered throughout the campus. The cubic structures are slightly different: the elementary school blocks are more rounded, while the middle ones, on the contrary, are angular.

The Art Center even looks like a piece of rock with its flat faces punctuated by many windows. The building has two double-height atriums, so natural light enters every corner.

In this project, special attention was paid to the landscape: there are open learning spaces, gardens, walking paths, “wild” zones with ponds, hills and lots of trees. In addition, a 400-meter running track runs through the campus.

“The landscape has a magical power,” say the architects. – Gardens, fields, forests and ponds soften and unify the different buildings into a whole.” They also hope that children will feel welcome at this school, especially those who struggle in more institutional environments.

The Boys and Girls Club is a project designed to provide children ages 6-18 with a safe and healthy environment for physical and intellectual extracurricular activities. It really matters to the local kids because the club is located on the border of two municipalities, Tecamac and Ekatepek, and the area includes as many as 15 poor neighborhoods within just two kilometers. Ecatepec and Tecamac have more than 2 million inhabitants and boast one of the highest crime rates in Mexico.

According to the creators of the project, the most difficult task of the project was to interact with the local population: it was important to earn the trust of the local community. During construction, the architectural team held events for residents of nearby neighborhoods to communicate the club’s mission and future programs.

The complex itself consists of three buildings. Building A is the space for educational projects, with classrooms, music, art or computer rooms. In addition, this building has a kitchen, library and multifunctional room. Building B is for art classes. The building is hardly used for studies, but there is a dance studio, martial arts room, exhibition and event space. And the back C is occupied by a sports complex – a large comfortable hangar that can be zoned and adapted for any sports activities.

In general, the creation of the complex is a strong story about charity, as the project was able to turn into reality thanks to donations from companies and local patrons.
